Unsigned Artist

Hello everyone,
My name is Gail and the reason that I decided to start my blog is because there is so much raw talent in the world today. But being able to get signed to a record label is very hard. I have been helping my son get started with his music career and it has been difficult. Blogging will enable me to get and stay connected to other people that have the same interest, as well as people looking for new artist, and those that may have information regarding talents search contest as well. Is there anyone that has any suggestions for me? If so I am willing to listen and share the things that I learn.
I have also enrolled into Full Sail University as a Music Business Major. I feel that learning as much as possible concerning the entertainment industry will lead me into the right directions.  The music era changes so much and staying informed of those changes are a must in this industry. In the near future I will also be adding some of my sons’ music for my friends and bloggers to review and comment on as well.

  1. I can agree the labels today are very difficult to get in touch with and to have music heard through them. At times they can be very picky and not really pay attention to underground artists and those who are really talented just because they never heard of them, or feel they meet the mass media sound of today. It is especially hard for rap artists to find labels because they're are very few that are still seeking artists because they are already well established such as Bad Boy, Grand Hustle, Def Jam, Island Def Jam, and so forth.

The best way to go about getting your son heard through a major would be to present something that they would have to listen to. Most artists just put some tracks on a CD, send it to labels, and hope it gets heard. But in today's industry it's not as simple as it used to be. I would suggest putting together a complete portfolio that included a CD with a digital label, booklet containing information about your son, what he does, detailed info about each track, and so forth. To make a long story short, treat the demo as if it were a full-flegged album. Also, if he has a large fan base such as a lot of twitter followers, a lot of views on YouTube, a lot of likes on a Facebook page designed for his music, and so forth, you could also include those in the portfolio package as well, this would show labels that he already has a fan base high enough so that once he released an album, people would buy it right away.

I hope some of this has helped, and I wish you and your son the best of luck. Just keep your head high, don't let nothing come in the way of pursuing your dreams, and stay at it.

    1. Hi William,
I have already started his portfolio, and he has already put together one CD and is working on his second one. Right now we're getting together a cover for that first CD. We don't have to worry about the second because he won a contest and the CD cover is the prize that he chose. He also has followers on all those sites that you mentioned. I guess I'm headed in the right direction.

      Respectfully,
      Gail

  2. I definitely agree with you on how difficult is it to show the musician the talents of other people singing and being heard. It is a tricky field to be pick up by someone or even the top rated music artist. I like how you will put your sons music on your blogs to get people to realize how talented he is. I hope everything goes well with you.

    1. Hi Justin,
I'm working on that now. But if it can't e uploaded to the blog site I will be providing links to different sites where his music can be heard and even downloaded for those that want a copy.

      Respectfully,
      Gail
